Op. 3 – Pleasure Dome

Bassoon and Piano

  • Composed: 1980
  • Time: 5 minutes

Pleasure Dome was written at the request of Ronald Bukoff and was performed by him with me at the piano in 1980. The title comes from the famous poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. After completing the piece I felt the need to justify the juxtaposition of musical materials by explaining that the music at times evokes the somewhat exotic atmosphere of Xanadu (sections in 5/8) with party music in rock style, indicating the pleasurable activities in the dome.
